Qatar ratified the income tax treaty with Malta


Qatar ratified the income tax treaty between Qatar and Malta, signed on 26 August 2009. Details of the treaty will be reported subsequently.

Among the agreements signed was an accord on the avoidance of double taxation and fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income.

Signing on behalf of Qatar was Minister of International Cooperation and acting Minister of Business and Trade, Dr Khalid bin Mohamed al-Attiyah, and on behalf of Malta, Tonio Borg, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs.

In addition, according to reports on the meeting, the two officials signed agreements on increasing cooperation the legal sector, and an air transport agreement. Increased cooperation with regard to media matters was also agreed upon.

In a statement released in January 2009, following an agreement on the text of the DTA being reached between the two sides, Maltese Finance Minister, Tonio Fenech stated that:

“This agreement will extend the double taxation treaty network, which enable Malta to develop trade relations with other countries, attract inward direct investment and serve as an important platform for Maltese residents doing business in partner countries.”
