Dr. Clarissa Cefai obtained her LL.D (Doctorate of Laws) in 2006 from the University of Malta. In 2007 she graduated from the University of Southampton, U.K. where she awarded her LL.M. (Masters Degree) in Maritime Law.
Other courses undertaken by Clarissa include the IFSP Course in Trust and Trust Management in 2005 and in 2009 she attended a course on Corporate Law, organized by the International Law Society (ILS). She also attended a course in Aviation Law in 2010 and Collective Investment Schemes in 2011, both organized by the ILS.
Clarissa specialises in commercial shipping issues and has regularly advised on disputes arising under bills of lading and charterparties, as well as obtaining security under a maritime claim and any other related or ancillary matter. Clarissa deals with ship registration and ship finance procedure, and has also over the recent years, gained experience in corporate and trust law.
Upon completion of her Masters Degree in Maritime law, Clarissa worked with the P&I Club, Steamship Insurance Management Services Limited, in London from 2007 – 2009. Most of her work consisted of cargo and FD&D claims, as well as collisions, piracy, crew, FFO claims and DTH cover.
She has substantial experience in working with Greek, Italian, Indian and Pakistani clients, including ship owners, charterers, traders, surveyors, local correspondents (legal and otherwise) as well as banks and other related institutions.
In May 2009 Clarissa joined Cefai &Associates, a family oriented law firm founded in 1976 and today a well known specialist commercial and shipping law firm on the international and European circuits.
In 2009 Clarissa obtained the necessary licence to act as Director and Trustee from the MFSA and joined Corporate Services Limited (CSL) a Maltese corporate service provider established in 1988.
In 2011 she became a partner with Fides Corporate Services Limited where she presently assists in the management and incorporation of various Maltese companies. Clarissa also provides legal advise on various issues and assists in contract drafting when required. Collaterally, Clarissa undergoes work for Cefai &Associates, specifically in shipping related matters but has also assisted in civil personal injury disputes and other disputes of a civil nature.
Clarissa is a member of the Chamber of Advocates, Malta.
